The OIC Gambia Secretariat in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure Tuesday held the Award of Contract Ceremony for the 50km OIC urban road project. 
The award of the contract to Lot 1- CSE/ALFAHD/SSTP and Lot 2- PAVIFORT/HUTA/GAMBISARA follows a comprehensive and exhaustive bidding and evaluation process. 
The Chief Executive Officer of The Gambia OIC Secretariat, Mr. Yankuba Dibba highlighted the benefits of the roads which include a boost in commerce, socio-economic development, and an improved urban outlook. 
“Once completed, these 20 new roads will decrease the volume of traffic logjams and speed up travel by more than half the usual time. Given their strategic geo-locations, the identified roads, which connect major communities, will no doubt reduce pressure on major highways enabling commuters to move with ease and pace” CEO Dibba said. 
He sought the cooperation of the general public as the construction works would cause disruption.
“We are seeking the cooperation and understanding of the general public, especially those whose properties and daily routines will be affected by civil works…there is no greater or nobler sacrifice than forgoing your convenience for the progress and prosperity of your country. And our nation and future generations shall owe a huge debt of gratitude to those that will oblige” he said. 
The Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, Bai Lamin Jobe said the project marks an important milestone in the infrastructural development of the country. He thanked the financier, Saudi Fund for Development for their continuous support to the government of The Gambia. 
The Managing Director of the National Roads Authority, Mr. Momodou Senghore said, the roads will significantly add value to the lives of Gambians. In the same vein, cognizant of the challenges the construction of the roads will pose, they would seek a multi-sectoral approach for the right of way that would minimize initial delays. 
The contractors for their part, expressed delight at being selected for the implementation of the project. They assured of quality roads with international standards, delivered in a timely manner. 
The construction of the 20 urban roads is expected to significantly decongest traffic, create employment, and help boost local commerce.
